General
The CPU client is the original Folding@home client. It was designed to run on a single CPU, which meant that you have to run multiple clients to use all CPUs available in a multi CPU (SMP) system. This article focuses on the features of the normal CPU client, the SMP client was developed to make optimal use of multi CPU systems.
Supported Operating Systems & Hardware
CPU clients exist for several Operating Systems and CPU architectures.
- Windows
- 95/98
- NT/2000/XP/XP64/2003/Vista1
- Linux
- Mac OS X
- FreeBSD2
- OpenBSD2
1 Windows Vista support is considered experimental at present
2 FreeBSD and OpenBSD systems run the Linux client with a specific flag
CPU clients for Mac OS X only exist as PowerPC (G3 - G5) binaries.
On the flipside, the SMP client for Mac OS X only supports Intel (x86) binaries.
CPU clients for Windows and Linux exist as i386 (32bit) binaries. The clients can run on 32bit versions of Windows/Linux installed on either x86 or x86-64 hardware. The clients can also run on 64bit versions of Windows/Linux installed on x86_64 hardware. When installed in this configuration, the Windows clients will run in WOW64 mode; the Linux clients will require that ia32libs be installed (if not already). These clients will not run natively on IA64 (Itanium) hardware.
